Driveway permits are necessary for the installation of a new driveway or for existing driveways if making any structural changes/additions/etc., such as replacing a culvert pipe.  

A driveway permit is required before being issued a building permit via the Building/Planning department or obtaining a legal address.

To report a pothole, road hazard, or missing sign on a county maintained road, you may submit your request under the Report a Pothole/Road Hazard page or you may call our office at (812) 988-4545 during office hours which is Monday - Friday from 8 am to 4 pm.

To report a tree blocking the roadway, please call the Highway Dept. at (812) 988-4545.  If you should need assistance after hours, please call the Brown County Sheriff's Dept. at (812) 988-6655.
We can only remove trees that are physically in the roadway - we do not have the equipment nor jurisdiction to remove trees that are hanging above the roadway.  

***If a utility line is involved/attached to the downed tree, please contact the appropriate utility company to report the damage first - for safety reasons, we cannot assist in the removal of the debris until the utility lines are cleared.

The county tries to keep the shoulders of the road mowed for safety reasons.  Mowing increases the visibility when driving on a narrow roadway or pulling out of intersections.  

Trees and bushes may be trimmed or removed from the right-of-ways that interfere with drainage and/or safety to the traveling public. Sometimes there may be a need for additional clearance from the edge of pavement to allow for mirrors on heavy-duty trucks and school buses. 

The right of way is typically 16.5 feet from the centerline of the road, HOWEVER, the right of way may vary throughout the county.  If you have any questions or concerns, you may call our office. 

The highway department takes care of all county roads with the EXCEPTION of state roads, private drives, roads within the Cordry-Sweetwater district, and roads within the Town of Nashville limits.  For more information, visit the County Roads section of our page.
